Highlights and Accomplishments FY09
During the past year, the USMSFP focused research on three major objectives: Stock Improvement, Disease Control, and Sustainable Culture Technology. In addition, the USMSFP assisted industry directly under some of these objectives by providing broodstock, postlarvae, education and training, and disease diagnostics.  Following are highlight thrusts and achievements of the USMSFP conducted under each major activity.

Stock Improvement
Considerable progress was made during the reporting period under the Stock Improvement objective. In particular, there was continued progress in protecting, developing, and improving populations of SPF, selectively bred Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, for research and industry. To protect these stocks, OI continued to maintain backup stocks of shrimp representing all genetically distinct families produced at the Nucleus Breeding Center (NBC) in Waimanalo, Hawaii (on the island of Oahu; Task 1.1.1). Backup stocks were maintained in Kona, Hawaii (on the island of Hawaii) and served as insurance so that the valuable genetic material in the breeding program would not be lost in the event of a natural disaster or disease outbreak at OI’s NBC.

Disease Control
Significant progress was made in developing and refining disease diagnostic tools for the shrimp farming industry. UAZ made significant progress towards developing a polyclonal antibody detection method for IHHNV.

Sustainable Culture Technology
Research on sustainable culture technologies focused on further refinement of super-intensive, recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).
