Brazil sees spread in White
Spot Shrimp Virus
It has been reported by industry
media outlet The Wave that White Spot Shrimp
Virus has spread in Brazil.
According to Mr. Alexandre
Alter Wainberg of PRIMAR, an organic shrimp
farm in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, the
occurrence of WSSV was confirmed by Labomar,
a pathogen lab of Federeal University at
Ceará. The virus was found in one
pond at Compescal, in Aracati - Ceará State.
The pond had 200 days culture of shrimp greater
than 18 grams and a survival rate of 40 percent.
The Brazilian Shrimp Growers Association
is starting a screening program in three
States to check the WSSV in shrimp.
Mr. Wainberg said development
of the disease was inevitable as the model
adopted by the Brazilian industry does not
seem to him to be sustainable. He said the
farms crowd the estuaries and use very high
densities without using the necessary infrastructure
and biosecurity.
Mr. Wainberg provided a Brazilian
newspaper clip to USMSFP for confirmation.
The USMSFP will continue to
follow this issue and, as we acquire credible
information, will post it here at www.usmsfp.org.
