WINNIE, TEXAS - The Texas Department of Agriculture
is scheduled to hold a listening session
for Texas producers who believe they have
experienced an aquaculture loss because of
the Hurricane Rita disaster. Eligible producers
will be those who raise aquaculture species
in a controlled environment as part of a
farming operation, have suffered a risk in
the production of that species, and have
not received aid for that loss under any
other
disaster program.
The session will be held
5-7 p.m. on May 18 at the Winnie Rice Festival
Building located at 1410 Rice Festival Ave.
in Winnie.
The meeting’s purpose is to gather
information so that the Texas Department
of Agriculture can set guidelines and develop
registration forms to better administer funding
through the Department of Agriculture’s
Aquaculture Grant Program. The program received
$712,500 to distribute among qualified candidates
in increments of no more than $80,000 per
person. The compilation of the information
received from the producers will be available
for the public via the June Publication of
the Texas Register.
To apply for assistance,
producers must provide supporting documentation
for all
losses, such as feed bills. Producers
unable to attend the meeting, but have verifiable
documentation of losses are urged to contact
Cary Brown, TDA federal and trade specialist,
at cary.brown@agr.state.tx.us before May
26.
