First Quarter 2005 Thai shrimp exports dropped 13 percent

As reported by the Thai Frozen Foods Association, the volume of Thai frozen and fresh shrimp exported globally dropped in the first three months of 2005 to 27,382 metric tons.

Volume sales to the United States , Thailand ’s largest market, fell 30 percent to 13,453 metric tons. Volume sales to its second largest market, Japan , declined 9 percent to 4,127 metric tons. Sales to Canada soared nearly 60 percent to 2,380 metric tons during the first quarter of 2005; sales to Alaska jumped 70 percent to 1,052 metric tons.

The association’s statistics indicate exports of fresh, chilled and frozen fish from Thailand to Vietnam soared 9,243 percent, leaping from 814 metric tons in the first quarter of 2004 to 76,000 metric tons during the same period this year.
