Venture capital seeds Mill's Rooks' dream for Ocean's Bounty Seafarms

Ridgeland, N.C.--Mills Rooks hopes to have the first phase of the $3 million privately funded venture called Ocean's Bounty Seafarms -- which will include 16 greenhouses -- completed and operating by the end of the year.

If everything goes according to plan, the company will have its first harvest next spring. As soon as the process produces its first successful crop, Rooks said, he'll begin full expansion.

Rooks plans to use technology developed by the Waddell Mariculture Center in greater Bluffton, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Marine Shrimp Farming Program. The center aims to develop technology to increase domestic shrimp production and decrease reliance on imported shrimp.
