Compass
Group USA changes policy to purchase sustainable
farmed shrimp
Compass
Group USA is shifting its purchases
toward sustainably-sourced seafood and away
from environmentally threatened fish.
The policy will affect 1 million pounds
of fish purchased annually by the Charlotte-based
company.
Under the policy, scheduled to begin March
1, Compass Group will replace Atlantic cod
with the more environmentally sound Pacific
cod, pollock and other alternatives.
Compass Group also plans to seek ways to
decrease its use of shrimp and salmon that
are farmed in an unsustainable manner.
Compass Group is the largest food-service
company ever to introduce sustainable seafood
purchasing as policy on this scale.
"Compass Group is proud to embrace
a sustainable-seafood policy that will support
the health of our oceans," says Gary
Green, chief executive of the company's Americas
division. "When we learned about the
significant impact that our purchasing shift
could make, it was clear that this was the
right thing to do."
The program's implementation includes the
development of purchasing standards, internal
compliance mechanisms and chef training.
The policy is expected to be fully implemented
within three years.
Compass Group USA is a division of United
Kingdom-based Compass Group, the world's
largest food-service management company.
The parent company has operations in more
than 90 countries, more than 400,000 employees
and annual revenue of $23.5 billion.
