Japanese seafood supplier acquires vannamei farm in Malaysia

TOKYO--Japanese seafood supplier Maruha Group, Inc., will spend more than 3 billion yen to acquire Agrobest Sdn Bhd in Malaysia soon, according to the Nikkei press.
Maruha, a unit of Maruha Nichiro Holdings Inc, will buy the shares from Agrobest's parent, SH Corp, the Nikkei said.
Agrobest cultivates large black tiger shrimps and exported to Japan nearly all 2,600 tons of shrimp it farmed in 2006, the newspaper said.
After the acquisition, Agrobest will begin farming vannamei shrimp as well, the Nikkei said. Agrobest plans to farm 7,500 tons of shrimp in 2009, with more than half to be vannamei shrimp, the newspaper said.
